Fixes for Yamaha YPAO error codes and warnings, and the problems people hit most after measuring. The error and warning meanings come from Yamaha’s own manuals.

Find your problem

YPAO error E-1, E-2, E-3 or E-4 (No Front SP / No Sur. SP / No F.PRNS SP / No Sur. Back SP)

  1. Exit YPAO and switch the receiver off.
  2. Check the connections for the speaker group named (E-1 front, E-2 surround, E-3 front presence, E-4 surround back).
  3. Switch on and re-run.

E-5: Noisy

  1. Make the room as quiet as possible and retry.
  2. Selecting “PROCEED” re-measures and ignores the detected noise (use only if the noise cannot be removed).

E-6: Check Sur.

  1. Surround back speakers need surround speakers connected. Exit YPAO, switch off, connect the surrounds (or remove the surround backs), then re-run.

E-7: No MIC or E-8: No Signal

  1. Push the YPAO microphone firmly into the YPAO jack and retry.
  2. If E-8 keeps appearing, contact an authorised Yamaha dealer or service centre (possible mic or unit fault).

E-9: User Cancel or E-10: Internal Err.

  1. E-9: the measurement was cancelled; retry or exit.
  2. E-10: exit YPAO, switch the unit off and on again. If it repeats, contact a Yamaha service centre.

W-1: Out of Phase

  1. Check the + and – connections on the named speaker and reconnect if needed.
  2. If wiring is correct, the warning can appear because of speaker type or room conditions and can be disregarded.

W-2: Over Distance

  1. A speaker is more than 24 m from the listening position. Exit, switch off, move it within 24 m and re-run.

W-3: Level Error / subwoofer level comes out strange

  1. Before measuring, set the subwoofer volume to half and, if adjustable, its crossover to maximum.
  2. Check the cable and position of the named speaker.
  3. Yamaha recommends speakers with matching specifications where possible.

How do I do a multi-position (multipoint) YPAO measurement, and why is Multiple unavailable?

  1. Select “Multiple” as the measuring option; up to 8 positions (about 15 minutes for 8).
  2. Keep the mic at ear height at each seat (tripod recommended), stay out of the way, room quiet, no headphones connected, nothing blocking the speakers.
  3. Multiple cannot be enabled when wireless speakers are in use.
  4. Keep the mic out of direct sunlight or heat; it is heat sensitive.

After YPAO it sounds too bright or thin

  1. In the equaliser setting, try YPAO:Natural (same correction with a lowered high-frequency range) instead of YPAO:Flat.
  2. YPAO:Front matches all speakers to the fronts; Through disables the EQ for comparison.
  3. These options only appear once YPAO results have been saved.

I don’t like the new results. How do I go back to the previous YPAO?

  1. Setup menu > Speaker, select “Setup Reload” and press ENTER, then press SETUP.
  2. Previous Wiring, Size, Distance and Level values can be viewed in “YPAO Result”.

Quiet listening sounds thin / what is YPAO Volume?

  1. YPAO Volume adjusts high and low frequency levels with volume so low-level listening sounds natural. It is set On automatically after a YPAO measurement.
  2. For late-night listening Yamaha suggests YPAO Volume and Adaptive DRC together.
