Position 1 is your main seat and it matters most. The other positions help YPAO correct the whole seating area rather than one spot.
Where the mic goes
Beginner
- Position 1: your main seat, at the height of your ears when you’re sitting.
- If your receiver offers multi-point, use it. Put the other positions 60 to 90 cm from position 1, in different directions.
- More positions give YPAO more to work with. Most current models allow up to 8.
What to put it on
Use a tripod or stand so the mic is in free air. Don’t rest it on the sofa, a cushion or a table, which reflect sound into it.
The tripod advice is standard practice from experienced users.
Measurement patterns
Advanced
Yamaha only gives the 60 to 90 cm rule. One widely used enthusiast pattern for 8 positions is:
- Positions 1 to 3 across the main seating area at ear height, starting with the main seat.
- Positions 4 to 6 at the same spots but slightly higher, just clearing the top of the seat back.
- Positions 7 and 8 in between the others.
For a second row, use some of the positions there, keeping position 1 at the main seat.
On models with angle and height measurement, choose that option instead of the normal multi-point measure. It adds an extra measurement to locate height speakers. Your model’s manual shows the exact positions.
Low to medium for the 8-position pattern, which is one experienced user’s method, not Yamaha’s.
