Fixes for the problems people hit most with Audyssey MultEQ and MultEQ XT32 on Denon and Marantz receivers, and the MultEQ Editor app. Each fix comes from the Denon or Marantz manual unless it’s labelled community.
Find your problem
- My receiver says No speakers found
- Ambient noise is too high or level is too low
- It says [speaker name]: None, one speaker was not detected
- Audyssey shows [speaker name]: Phase. Is my speaker wired backwards?
- Subwoofer level error / what level should my sub be at before measuring?
- Audyssey set my sub level to -12 dB, is that a problem?
- Why is my subwoofer distance much longer than it really is?

My receiver says No speakers found
- Check the calibration microphone is pushed fully into the SETUP MIC jack.
- If it is, check every speaker connection, then re-run Audyssey Setup.

Ambient noise is too high or level is too low
- Switch off or move noise sources (fans, air conditioning, appliances) and retry when the room is quiet.
- If the room is already quiet, the problem is level: check speaker placement and that speakers face the listening position.
- Turn up the subwoofer’s own volume control.

- Check the cable connections for the named speaker at both ends.
- Re-run the measurement.

Audyssey shows [speaker name]: Phase. Is my speaker wired backwards?
- Check the + and – wires on that speaker and the receiver terminal.
- If they are correct, select “Ignore” and press ENTER. The manual states this message can appear for correctly connected speakers.

Subwoofer level error / what level should my sub be at before measuring?
- On models that show this check (e.g. Marantz CINEMA 50), adjust the subwoofer’s own volume control until the on-screen reading is between 72 and 78 dB.
- Before starting, the Denon AVR-X1700H manual says to set the sub volume to the 12 o’clock position, crossover to maximum (or low-pass filter off) and standby/auto-on mode off.

Audyssey set my sub level to -12 dB, is that a problem?
- -12 dB is the bottom of the trim range, so Audyssey may have run out of adjustment.
- Turn the sub’s own gain down and re-run so the post-calibration trim lands just above the minimum (the guide suggests roughly -11.5 to -10 dB).

Why is my subwoofer distance much longer than it really is?
- Nothing to fix. The Denon manual states subwoofers may show a greater distance than the real one because of electrical delay in the sub.
- Do not “correct” it to the tape-measure distance, as that undoes the timing alignment.

I added a speaker after running Audyssey and now it sounds wrong
- Re-run Audyssey Setup in full. The manual says not to enable new speakers in the speaker configuration menu after setup, and to run setup again if the configuration changes.
- Do not switch the unit off while results are being saved.

I’ve fiddled with the settings. How do I get back to the Audyssey results?
- In the Audyssey setup menu, set “Restore…” to “Restore”. This returns to the values MultEQ calculated, even after manual changes.

After Audyssey it sounds dull / too bright / not like my speakers
- Try the MultEQ curve options: Reference (default, slight high-frequency roll-off), Flat (for small rooms where you sit close to the speakers), L/R Bypass (leaves front left and right uncorrected), Off.
- Compare with Dynamic EQ on and off (see item 11), as it changes tonal balance with volume.
- If voices or detail sound recessed or dull, try turning off midrange compensation with the MultEQ Editor app. The receiver menu can’t change it. See Step 4: midrange compensation.
- If none helps, re-measure with the mic at seated ear height, tip pointing at the ceiling.

Dynamic EQ makes music boomy / Dynamic EQ or Reference Level Offset is greyed out
- Raise Reference Level Offset: 0 dB for films, 5 dB for very wide dynamic range (classical), 10 dB for jazz and wide-range music, 15 dB for pop/rock mixed at high levels.
- If Dynamic EQ is greyed out, check MultEQ is not “Off”; Reference Level Offset only appears when Dynamic EQ is on.
- Audyssey settings are unavailable in Direct or Pure Direct modes, DTS Virtual:X, and DTS:X above 48 kHz.
- Dynamic Volume (Light/Medium/Heavy) compresses loudness swings; leave Off (default) for critical listening.

MultEQ Editor app can’t find or connect to my receiver
- Check your model is on the app’s compatibility list; the store listing states it will not work with Denon/Marantz models not listed (2016 and newer models broadly).
- Put the phone/tablet on the same network as the receiver; a wired Ethernet connection for the receiver is recommended.
- If the app shows as unavailable on Android, check the device meets the listed requirements (Android 5.0 or later, 2 GB RAM); an Android emulator on a PC has worked for some users.
