Run it

Beginner

  1. Plug the mic into the SETUP MIC socket and put it at position 1.
  2. Open the setup menu and choose Audyssey Setup, then Start.
  3. Check the options it shows first, such as amp assignment and which channels to use.
  4. Choose Begin Test. Each speaker and the subwoofer plays test tones.
  5. Check the list of speakers it found. If one is missing or wrong, stop and fix the wiring or the speaker settings.
  6. Move the mic to position 2 and continue. Repeat for every position.
  7. Wait while it calculates. Don’t switch the receiver off.
  8. Choose your Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume settings when asked. Step 4 explains them, and you can change them later.
  9. Unplug the mic when asked and save the result.

If you see a warning

If it says the subwoofer level is too high or too low, adjust the volume knob on the sub, then measure again. Any other warning usually means a speaker isn’t connected or the room was too noisy.

After Audyssey, don’t add or remove speakers in the speaker setup menu. The calibration only matches the layout it measured. Change the layout, and you need to run it again.

Audyssey has saved its result. Now check the settings it chose and tune them to taste.

What Audyssey measures and when to run it again

Advanced

From the measurements Audyssey sets each speaker’s distance and level, proposes a crossover for each speaker, and designs EQ filters for every channel. The distances and levels come from position 1. The EQ comes from all positions together.

Run it again when

  • You move a speaker, change its angle or add or remove one.
  • You move the seating.
  • You make a big change to the room, such as adding acoustic panels or a large sofa.

Changing crossovers, levels or Dynamic EQ afterwards doesn’t need a re-run.
